Introduction

Although many of the receptionist's duties are at the front desk dealing with guests - their arrivals, departures and of course, their numerous enquiries and requests - there will be other daily duties 'behind the scenes' which are an integral part of the receptionist's job.

Many of these duties have been mentioned in other modules, but here we will look in a little more detail at various office procedures and the paperwork involved with reservations and billings.

In a large hotel catering for hundreds of guests, the receptionist may find her duties do not involve all these aspects, as other staff  working for other departments will be employed to take care of such duties as the post, the filing, and sending out promotional material, etc.  However, the receptionist employed in small to medium sized hotels will need to be more adaptable as her daily routine will involve a wide variety of activities.  It should be appreciated, that the work of staff in larger hotels dealing with these matters, will differ only in volume from the situation where the receptionist performs these duties.
