Professionalism

We have already established that the first impression of a hotel is that given by the receptionist, and one of the most important impacts on first impressions is that of appearance.

Dress

The receptionist should endeavour to stay neat and well-groomed, no matter how busy and hectic the day.  A neat well-groomed appearance does not come about by mere chance, it must be planned for.

To help plan the perfect appearance, take advice from senior receptionists and management - most hotels will have a dress code and some may provide a dress allowance or a uniform to help promote a corporate appearance.

It is then important to take care of all work clothes - they should be clean and immaculate in appearance - no drooping hems or missing buttons.  A shabbily dressed receptionist may lead the guest to expect the same of the hotel - missing radio controls and faulty door handles perhaps.

Footwear should always be well-fitting, clean and well-maintained - remember your comfort as well as maintaining a professional image.  High fashion shoes with high heels may look good but how will they make your feet feel after a seven-hour shift in a busy reception office?

The appearance you are trying to give is one of professionalism and that the guest's comfort and service is of the highest priority, this can only be achieved by dressing in a smart, business-like manner.
