Chemistry Tests
Test Notes
I have made several silent modifications from the original AP tests, mainly due to the limited formatting capabilities of HTML. For example, in question 30 of the 1984 multiple choice questions, I have used this form of a nuclear symbol (92-U-238) rather than the symbol with atomic number subscripted left and the mass number superscripted left. Question 50 of the 1995 National Chemistry Olympiad National test is similiar.
I have tried to be true to the spirit of the originals. If you ever feel I have overstepped my bounds, please let me know and I'll reconsider what I did in light of your comments.
Starting in 1996, a page of symbolic equations like PV = nRT is provided to each AP testee for their use. This renders the scoring on past tests somewhat obsolete, because a point many times was awarded for writing the symbolic equation before plugging in the values and solving.
The answers provided are not intended to be exhaustive. There are solution methods which, while they are not given in the answers, did receive full credit.
- Flinn Scientific, Inc.
- Flinn will mail you a copy of the scoring standards for the current year's Advanced Placement Test in chemistry. I think they also do biology and physics. I don't know about their policy for mailing outside of the US and Canada. The test is scored in June, so if you ask in the August/September time frame, you should get it fairly quickly.
- Vernita Frazier
- Ms. Frazier operates out of the high scool chemistry office of the American Chemical Society. She will send you a booklet that, among some statistics, will include copies of the current year's National Chemistry Olympiad test for the US and the International Chemistry Olympiad test. Once again, I don't know what they do regarding inquiries from overseas. The booklet is available in late September.

- Hope College Summer Institute Lab Disk
- Contact person: Eugene C. Jekel, Department of Chemistry, Hope College, P.O. Box 9000, Holland, MI 49422-9000, USA.
There are 39 labs on disk plus a 320 page hard copy which includes diagrams and data tables not found on disk as well as a printout of all labs. These lab are mostly suited for an honors or second year chemistry course.
The cost is US$20 for the USA, US$22 for Canada and Mexico and US$30 for other countries. Make checks payable to Hope College.
Orders should specify Macintosh (Word 5.1 format) or DOS (WordPerfect 5.1 format) as well as either high density or double density.
Original announcement found in J. Chem. Educ., April 1996, page 353. The introduction to the materials specifically asks for no e-mail orders.
- Free Periodic Table #1
- Send a request on school letterhead to: The Hibbert Group, Comprehensive Marketing Services, 400 Pennington Avenue, P.O. Box 8116, Trenton, NJ 08650-0116. This table is an Allied-Signal Inc. Periodic Table which is about 8 x 5.5 inches. It has a six-inch ruler on the Periodic Table side while the reverse side is titled "International Atomic Weights" and has a 15-cm ruler. There is a number (385-255) and a date (11/90) toward the lower right corner just below the address (Allied-Signal Inc., Engineered Materials Sector, P.O. Box 1087, Morristown, NJ 07962) and the free offer. I have no idea if this offer is valid outside the USA. There are some mistakes in the table (Ti for Tl and there is at least one atomic weight wrong).
- Free Period Table #2
- Send a request on school letterhead to: Merck Institute for Science Education, P.O. Box 2000, Rahway, NJ 07065. This a large-format, fold-out table with no mistakes. However, the table lacks the name of each element in the boxes of the table. I have no idea if this offer is valid outside the USA.
