To investigate and understand control mechanisms in the body, you must know about the structures and systems within the body and how they work.

You need to understand the gross structure and function of:

• the respiratory system
• the cardio-vascular system
• the digestive system
• the renal system
• the nervous system
• endocrine system
• interrelationship of body systems

1. How the organ systems relate to one another.
2. The reasons for the physiological monitoring of individuals in care settings, i.e. to determine any physiological dysfunction of homeostatic systems and to record data in order to make recommendations for appropriate care for the client.
3. the routine observations made on individuals e.g. pulse, temperature, blood pressure, peak flow and glucose.
4. how to take and record physiological measurements for an individual.
5. the expected range and deviations from the range for these measurements.
