The pulse can be taken from a range of pulse points across the body but is usually taken at the wrist.
- The first two fingers of the right hand (or left hand if left-handed) are placed gently but firmly over a point on the underside of the client's wrist in line with the thumb and about 2 cms. from the crease at the junction of wrist and hand.
- The pulse rate is counted for 15 seconds and then multiplied by four to give beats per minute.
- It should be taken into account that the client may be nervous, may have rushed to get to the appointment, may have been exercising.
- The average pulse rate for adults is between 60 and 80 beats per minute.
