How to take a pulse

The pulse can be taken from a range of pulse points across the body but is usually taken at the wrist.

  1. The first two fingers of the right hand (or left hand if left-handed) are placed gently but firmly over a point on the underside of the client's wrist in line with the thumb and about 2 cms. from the crease at the junction of wrist and hand.
  2. The pulse rate is counted for 15 seconds and then multiplied by four to give beats per minute.
  3. It should be taken into account that the client may be nervous, may have rushed to get to the appointment, may have been exercising.
  4. The average pulse rate for adults is between 60 and 80 beats per minute.
