Digestion is the process by which insoluble food is broken down into soluble compounds with smaller molecules.

These smaller molecules pass through the the walls of the intestine and eventually enter the blood stream.

Digestive system

Digestion and absorption take place in the alimentary canal, digestion is brought about by substances called enzymes.

The alimentary canal is a muscular tube running from mouth to anus with a lining called a mucosa.

The outer muscular layer propel the contents forward while the mucosa secretes

  1. enzymes

  2. mucus which lubricates and protects the internal surface of the gut.

Certain regions of the alimentary canal are specialised for particular functions and have differing structures.

The alimentary canal

The organs which together process food are tubular and are called the alimentary canal.

Each region of the canal has its own special job in the processing of food and the food moves along the canal.
